Active Humidification

Despite its benefits, when performed incorrectly, Mechanical Ventilation can cause damage to lung microstructures. One of the main precautions to be taken is Active Humidification, as prolonged breathing of gases through an endotracheal tube can cause damage to the lung epithelium. Since the function of the upper airways is to filter, heat and humidify inhaled gases, a task that is compromised by the interfaces of mechanical ventilation tubes, it is essential to ensure the integrity of the airways by means of these Active Humidification systems to prevent the unwanted effects of cold and dry gases on the tracheobronchial epithelium.
